How can we prevent identity theft?

The saying goes “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” By following these best practices, you can greatly reduce your risk of having compromised personal information:

  • Place a credit freeze on your account as a precautionary measure. Alert all three agencies.
  • Check your credit report at least three times per year. Check your children’s information. They should not be credit active until age 18.
  • Update your computer antivirus software. NEVER open any e-mail or attachment that is suspicious and be on high alert if asked for your financial or personal information.
  • Make privacy a priority on social media and always keep your phone and tablet/laptop secure.
  • Routinely review your bank/credit card statements for suspicious activity.
  • Passwords should not contain your name or date of birth.
  • Do not duplicate PINs and maintain them safely. Use a password manager. NEVER write down your debit card PIN.
  • File an insurance claim, if covered.
