Weekly Commentary
Economic Commentary – September 29 2025
Jeanette Garretty
It will be quite some time before the most significant effects of a less restrictive monetary policy become apparent. New home sales, for example, have already picked up as lower mortgage rates have combined with builder incentives to lower purchase prices, yet the far-larger market for existing home sales remains constrained by high price points. Car sales are commonly thought to be boosted by lower financing costs; however, enthusiasm for major purchases, such as cars, seems to be waning amid concerns about employment. There will be nothing in this week’s nonfarm payrolls data that should lead anyone to think that lower interest rates are having or will have any near-term impact on employment trends. Ultimately, the most important result of the Federal Reserve’s actions may be in the negatives that are mitigated. For businesses facing rising prices and the costs of extreme uncertainty, any assistance with lower financing costs is greatly appreciated. For a US government grappling with financing a too-large national debt, lower interest rates are also a material benefit, reducing some of the associated risks. In other words, we are back to the same, incessant question: can the Federal Reserve pull out (another) soft landing?
