September Metrics Establish Baseline Amid Limited Government Reporting
Jeanette Garretty
Economic data for September continues to gush out like water at the end of a fire hose. The problem seems to be that September feels like a LONG time ago. Nevertheless, reports on September employment (last week), and Producer Prices and Retail Sales (both this week), help to establish the base on which the economy is moving forward. There will be very little government-provided data for October, and November data will not begin to trickle out until mid-December; it is important to have some reasonably solid data for the end of the third quarter (September) to frame the more circumstantial evidence being generated by retailers and other businesses about prices, employment, and spending. As yet, there is very little to indicate that the economic behemoth that is consumer spending has slowed, although consumption spending patterns definitely seem to have changed. Equally interestingly, it appears that in the United States, Asia, and most of Europe, businesses have found ways to adapt to tariffs and trade volatility. Germany, Canada, US agriculture, and Italian pasta makers are notable examples of continuing discontent and discomfort, but they are more the exception than the rule, at this moment.
