Economic Commentary: Suppress Your Excitement

Suppress Your Excitement
Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh is a very good economist and occasionally emphasizes the point by indulging in the long, nerdy answers that delight the profession. It would thus be interesting to see what would happen if, at the press conference following the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on October 28, someone would ask him about the likely success of “Index suppression” efforts. Economists generally view temporary actions taken by regulators, legislators and/or the executive branch of government (White House, Treasury) to reduce select prices and manipulate inflation indices as just that — temporary— and often having adverse consequences. Nevertheless, the political temptation can be strong and irresistible.

In the last two weeks, energy markets have had to parse the effects of Russian diesel imports and possible US diesel export bans, housing markets have considered the impact of the waiving of mortgage insurance and title fees on select loans by federal government agencies and the State of Maine has found itself at the center of an unexpected debate about reducing certain tariffs on Canadian goods. The disruption and confusion of such actions probably far outweighs the intended beneficial economic impact in the short term, and the Federal Reserve is unlikely to consider this an essential sign that inflation will decelerate soon. And yet, an important point is being made: the key to improving affordability in the US is not just lowering the rate of inflation but also changing the structural costs on the provision of various consumer goods and services that have been imposed by legislation and regulation.
