I am considering buying the “Twelve Days of Christmas” gifts for a special person. How much $$ would it set me back, and has inflation affected the cost?

December 22, 2021 – I would make sure this special person is, well, exceptional! The 2021 price for each gift (no repetition) would be $41,205, a 5.4% increase over 2019 and more than double the turn of this century price of $20,989.

But like most of the economy, the details showed some variation. A swimming swan remained the highest cost at $13,125, but showed no increase. I can’t say that for the other “birds.” Geese, turtle doves, and French hens increased 57%, 50% and 40.5%, respectively!

A gender gap was also evident as leaping lords got pay raises, while maids-a-milking and ladies dancing saw no increase at all. Not fair!

Partridge prices remain steady, but if you want a pear tree, that’s going to cost you. Of course, it could be worse if you had to pay in Bitcoin!

In times of inflation, the gold rings could provide a good hedge.

Have fun!
